Create your first CV

CVSheets walks you through your first CV step by step, so you never face a blank page.

Start

Choose Build my CV on any page. A CV is kept in your account, so you first create a free one; it takes a minute. See Sign-in options and passkeys for the ways to create and protect your account.

Next we ask How would you like to start? There are three choices:

  • Start step by step: we take you through each part of your CV, one screen at a time.
  • Use the CV I already have: drop your old CV on the page, or press Choose a file. It can be a Word file, a PDF, plain text or a LinkedIn download. We turn it into sections you can edit and show you what we found first. Uploading your old CV is free for your first CV.
  • Start from an example for my job: pick a finished CV for your kind of work, then replace the details with yours.

Not sure? Step by step works for everyone.

Fill in your details

Add your contact details, a short professional summary, your work experience, education and skills. Each entry is a set of simple fields, and bullet points are plain lists, so there is nothing to format by hand.

You can reorder sections and bullets, hide sections you do not need, add custom sections and include an optional photo. Dates appear in a consistent style such as Jan 2024 – Present.

Pick a template

Two templates are available at launch: Classic, which is designed to be read cleanly by applicant tracking systems, and Modern two-column. Switching template never changes your content. Each template keeps the design we made for it, so every CV looks professional. You choose whether to show your photo and whether to use the simple layout for job websites.

Check the result

The preview next to the editor updates as you type. Under the preview, a CV checklist shows what is done and the next thing to do, with one button that takes you to the right box; the page count and the checks job websites use are under More detail. You can undo and redo any change. Your paper size follows your country, A4 or US Letter, and you can change it.

Next steps

When you are happy with it, press Finish at the top of the editor. The page that opens, Your CV is ready, is where you download your CV or send a link to it. Read Download formats for the file types, or Share a public link to send it to someone without a file. If something is unclear, the contact link at the bottom of this page reaches us.
